One cold night, a wealthy man encountered a homeless elderly man outside. The millionaire stopped and asked, “I see you don’t have a winter coat. Aren’t you cold?” The old man looked at him for a long moment and replied, “I don’t have a coat, but I’m used to it.” Astonished by the response, the rich man said, “Wait for me here! I’ll go into my house and bring you a thick coat to keep you warm tonight.” The old man, amazed and happy, promised to wait.
The rich man went into his house but got distracted and forgot his promise to the old man. The next morning, he remembered the poor man and hurried outside with the coat. Sadly, it was too late. The elderly man was gone, leaving behind a note that read, “When I didn’t have a thick coat, I had the strength to fight the cold because I was used to it. But when you promised to help me, I clung to your promise, and it took away my strength to resist.”
The man had died, and the realization crushed the rich man’s world.
This story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of keeping promises. Whether or not we fulfill our promises reveals the kind of people we are. Unfortunately, we sometimes fail to follow through, and while it may not seem significant to us, it can break someone’s heart and make them lose faith in humanity.
One day, a rich man noticed an elderly homeless man shivering in the cold. Feeling pity, he decided to approach him.
“I see you don’t have a winter coat. Aren’t you cold?” The old man stared at him for a moment and replied, “I don’t have one, but I’m used to it.” The rich man, surprised and saddened by the response, said, “Wait for me here! I’ll go into my house and bring you a thick coat to keep you warm tonight.”
The elderly man was overjoyed. He couldn’t believe someone was taking the time to help him.
Unfortunately, once inside, the rich man forgot about the homeless man. He only remembered his promise the next morning and quickly rushed outside with the coat. Sadly, it was too late. The elderly man was no longer there, and in his place was a note: “When I didn’t have thick clothes, I had the strength to fight the cold weather because I was used to it. But when you promised to help me, I clung to your promise, and it took my strength to resist.”
The man had died, leaving the rich man devastated.
This story is a poignant reminder that our promises should be sacred. We should never break them, as they can mean the world to those in need.
