Here’s how the scam works. A thief places an empty plastic bottle, often a water or soda bottle, against the front tire on the passenger side of your car. This location is chosen because it’s out of the driver’s immediate line of sight. When you return to your vehicle and start to drive away, the tire will crush the bottle. The result is a loud, alarming popping or crunching sound that is impossible to ignore. Your natural instinct is to stop immediately and get out to investigate what you’ve hit or what’s wrong with your car.
This moment of distraction is exactly what the thief is waiting for. They are often lurking nearby, watching. As you step out with the engine possibly still running or the doors left open to check the tire, they seize their chance. In just seconds, they can jump into the driver’s seat and drive off with your car, or quickly grab purses, laptops, or other valuables from the passenger compartment before fleeing. The entire scheme is designed to use your own concern for your vehicle against you.
The best defense against this trick is heightened awareness. Make it a non-negotiable habit to take a quick, conscious walk around your car before you get in. Look at your tires, check under the vehicle, and glance at the spaces around it. If you see a bottle or any other object deliberately placed near your tire, do not remove it yourself. This could be a setup to engage you while an accomplice approaches. Instead, calmly get back into your car, lock the doors, and drive slowly to a safe, well-populated location.
Once you are secure, call the police to report the suspicious item and your location. This does two important things: it keeps you safe from a potential confrontation, and it alerts authorities to possible criminal activity in the area.
