I Married My School Sweetheart

The air in our apartment smelled like vanilla candles and the expensive steak dinner Julian was cooking in the kitchen. It was our first wedding anniversary, a milestone that felt like the natural continuation of a lifelong fairytale.

Julian and I were the definition of high school sweethearts. I walked over to our entryway console table and smiled at the side-by-side framed photos we had just put up, exactly like the image in 724134019_1572870040898356_284154278758758770_n.jpg. On the left was “OUR PROM, 2010,” showing us as teenagers—me in my strapless pink gown holding a silver clutch, and Julian with his shaggy hair and bright blue vest. On the right was “OUR WEDDING, 2025,” capturing us just one year ago, radiant under the chandelier lights as bride and groom. We had spent fifteen years growing up together, surviving college, long distance, and career shifts.

I grabbed an empty wine bottle to take down to the recycling chute. As I stepped into the hallway and the heavy apartment door clicked shut behind me, I realized I’d forgotten the keys. I turned back, quietly slipping my copy into the lock so as not to startle Julian.

But as the door nudged open a crack, I froze.

Julian was pacing the living room, his voice dropped to a low, intense murmur I had never heard him use before. He was on the phone.

“I know, I know, it’s taken forever,” Julian whispered into the receiver, checking over his shoulder toward the kitchen. “But I’ve been pulling the wool over her eyes since school. Tonight I’ll finally do what I planned.”

My heart violently dropped into my stomach. The vanilla-scented air suddenly felt suffocating. Fifteen years. Since school. My mind raced through a horror reel of possibilities. Was our entire relationship a lie? A bet? Was he hiding a massive financial debt, another life, or an impending divorce on the very night we were supposed to be celebrating our paper anniversary?

Tears pricking my eyes, I pushed the door open fully, determined to confront him before the panic consumed me. The hinge gave a slight squeak.

Julian spun around, his eyes widening. He hastily muttered….
